Chasing Darkness
Review by David Rupp
Official Synopsys:
After a failed mob hit and near death experience with a rival gang, Vincent "Vinnie" Carpone (Todd Humes) has finally had enough. Enough of his life as a mafia hit man. Enough of his controlling girlfriend, Ciarra (Katie Russell). And enough of wondering about his own mortality.
When Vinnie tries to break way from his mob ties, the boss, Dominic (Larry Ligget) sends fellow hit men to remind Vinnie of the old Mob adage of "NO ONE GETS OUT". As if things aren't bad enough the rival gang turns out to be a group of bad ass vamps. This is where the party gets started. Actually there are quite a few scenes that stand out from a parking lot mob brawl, campers disemboweled, and what is it with the last several films I've seen that had fishermen/camping/woods walking guys getting totally fucked up? It works though.
I do have a few complaints on this but we'll get to them later as I have some rays of sunshine to bestow first. The acting was fairly strong and the practical effects were among the top of what I have seen come out of an independent studio this year. Make-up was good, it gave the vampires some depth and quite remind me of the old Salem’s Lot. Lighting was good on the interiors and this is where I have to raise an eyebrow. Sound was not up to par or should I say over par. Every mundane, unnecessary sound was over-accentuated, (footsteps, doors, glasses on tables). The other thing I had a problem with was the night shots. Now in defense I know how difficult it is to shoot day and run it through a blue filter to try for a night shot. But everything came out blue or bluer, I ended up with a nice surrealistic quality but I don't think that's what they were after. A good example of day for night shooting is on Revelations, the special features go into it, and yeah it's a bitch to get down right.
With that said I have to say it was an overall good view. The cast fit their roles well, the director, DP and crew were competent in their abilities, good story, the whole thing flowed and dammit I was entertained. I have to say I will be watching out for what these guys do next, and how they grow from this. So go now, check it out for youself.
